Random Combinations: A Creative Writing Exercise
What Are Random Combinations?
Random Combinations is a creative writing method where you take two or three completely unrelated elements — words, concepts, professions, settings, emotions — and force them into a single scene or story. The creative friction between incompatible elements generates ideas that planned thinking never reaches.
The principle behind this method is called "bisociation" — the act of connecting two normally unrelated frames of reference. It is the same cognitive process behind humor, scientific discovery, and artistic innovation. By practicing it deliberately, you train your brain to make creative leaps.
Part of the Imagination theme on Writaya, Random Combinations is one of the most effective methods for boosting your Imagination dimension scores.
Why It Matters for Writers
The most memorable stories come from unlikely combinations. A clownfish searching for his son. A post-apocalyptic world where books are illegal. A love story told backward. None of these ideas come from safe, logical thinking — they come from combining elements that "should not" go together.
This method directly addresses the Imagination skill dimension as discussed in our Imagination skill guide. Originality is not about being randomly weird — it is about finding meaningful connections between seemingly unrelated things.
How to Practice Random Combinations
Step 1: Generate three random elements. You can use a random word generator, open a dictionary to three random pages, or pick objects from around the room.
Step 2: Spend two minutes brainstorming how these elements could connect. Do not judge ideas yet — write every possibility, even ridiculous ones.
Step 3: Choose the connection that surprises you most and write a scene based on it. Not an outline, not a plan — a scene. Let the combination drive the writing.
Step 4: Read it back. The best parts will be the ones you did not plan — the moments where the combination forced you into unexpected territory.
Try It Now: A 5-Minute Exercise
Your three elements are: a dentist, a lighthouse, and jealousy. Write a scene that connects all three. You have five minutes. Do not plan — start writing and let the combination guide you. The stranger the connection you find, the better the exercise is working.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of This Technique
The more unrelated the elements, the harder the exercise — and the more creative the result. Easy combinations (doctor + hospital) do not push you. Hard combinations (dentist + lighthouse) force genuine invention.
When you are stuck, ask "what if one element is a metaphor?" The lighthouse does not have to be literal — maybe it is a person who guides others, or a tooth that stands alone in an empty mouth.
Use Random Combinations as a brainstorming tool for longer projects. When you are stuck on a story, generate three random elements and see if they unlock a new direction.
